"Truth in Science" site recovered, name promises worse

Postby Brian Jordan » Sat Apr 20, 2013 5:46 pm

No sooner has the "Truth" in Science website recovered from its week in oblivion than its name, at least, has descended to a new level of horror: it's being used for a fundamentalist curriculum being pushed in USA schools.
The Truth in Science curriculum is designed to strengthen the student's faith and enhance their relationship with God, while allowing them to be academically sound in the areas of science and objective reasoning. This is accomplished by combining the Truth in Science curriculum with existing textbooks to teach empirical knowledge through a secular approach while simultaneously teaching Biblical worldview and all 18 tenets of creation found in the Bible. The curriculum is designed to teach about God's awesome creation through solid scientific principles and to help the student discern the differences between true science and gross secular speculation not supported by facts.
Not only that, the article is actually about
Kansas City, MO – This morning the ACLU Foundation of Kansas & Western Missouri and the ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief e-mailed a joint letter to Mark Crawford, the Superintendent of the Hugoton Public Schools, protesting the school district’s plans to hold mandatory all-school assemblies at which a creationist organization, the Creation Truth Foundation of Noble, Oklahoma, will present its program on the “Truth about Dinosaurs.”
With friends like this, compulsory Christian worship in UK schools doesn't need enemies!

Another report on the above, in which some wiggle-room is claimed. However,
The Creation Truth Foundation sells a science curriculum called Truth in Science.
As they say, follow the money.
The group’s website says the lessons combine the Bible and science.

“The Bible, indeed, is not a science textbook,” it says, “but when it deals with any scientific issue, it is always correct.”
More wiggle room, but still painted in a corner.

On further reading cjonline, it looks as though the USA has an organisation even more deceptively named than our "Truth" in Science:
The district says Miles’ talks during the day will be on behalf of the Foundation for the Advancement of Childhood Education.

But the Creation Truth Foundation website shows the daytime talks on its own events calendar online. Miles is listed on the calendar as speaking in Hugoton schools. The calendar lists “school programs” planned for Monday and Tuesday morning and public presentations for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening. Miles’ cospeaker is Creation Truth Foundation founder G. Thomas Sharp, the calendar says.

The Foundation for the Advancement of Childhood Education website lists a similar name, George Sharp, Jr., as its founder.

According to Miles’ biography on the Creation Truth Foundation website, he is a missionary and teacher of Biblical origins who has “developed an excellent program in Biblical Astronomy.”

The ACLU says the Creation Truth Foundation’s events for next week include an assembly on the “Truth about Dinosaurs” that will be mandatory for high school and middle school students and teachers.
So just as "Truth in Science" really means "Lies about Science", it seems "Foundation for the Advancement of Childhood Education" might mean "Foundation for the Subversion of Childhood Education". Or even "Foundation for the Destruction of Childhood Education".
I say "seems". It's impossible to see from their web site what their take on dinosaurs is. Perhaps some creationists will come forward to dissociate themselves from the organisation, should it really tell children that dinosaurs died out millions of years ago, were not on Noah's ark, and did not eat Bishop Bell.

Sorry Michael. I didn't think they were the same lot - I claim poetic licence! It's difficult to see from the above site the extent to which they are creationist. Like the ACE people, they want money before you can see what they're up to.

Correction: I downloaded a random page of images for one of their courses and lo, it's starts of with "biology" saying "life can only come from life" while "evolution" says "life arose from the dead inorganic matter", Could it be where Dave1050 learned his science?

Oh, and if you are still in any doubt, they have illustrations of a grape palm, a tomato cactus, and a whaleocow. All that's missing from their collection of outrageous strawmen is the fabulous crocoduck.

Creationist speaker stirs controversy at Hugoton schools

Published 4/24/2013 in Local News
By RACHAEL GRAY
Hugoton Unified School District 210 allowed Matt Miles, of the Oklahoma based Christian Truth Foundation, to speak at three school assemblies this week on the topic of dinosaurs. He spoke to seventh- through 12th-grade students Tuesday afternoon at the high school.

USD 210 Hugoton Schools Superintendent Mark Crawford allowed a creationist speaker into public schools this week, despite the American Civil Liberties Union calling the assemblies unconstitutional.

The stipulation was that the speaker not mention creationism or any topics related to the age of the Earth or the Bible, according to district officials.
<snip>
"We do not like that this created a media stir," he [Crawford] said. "However, in six years as a citizen of Hugoton, I've learned the parents and citizens here in this community want their children to also be curious about other viewpoints of creation and origin.
A dead giveaway, no?

Re: Dr Richard Buggs

Although involved with Truth in Science, Dr Richard Buggs appears to be an Intelligent Design supporter and (probably) not a YEC:
http://www.richardbuggs.com/
http://www.truthinscience.org.uk/tis2/i ... n-pod.html (refers to a debate at the end of 2006)
Though I have also seen this:
http://www.bcseweb.org.uk/index.php/Main/RichardBuggs
I suppose some ID people also subscribe to YEC teachings, but hide this because they see ID as a stepping stone away from evolution(ism) and towards design and creationist beliefs. But other ID people eg Behe seem to be old Earthers.
I also saw this:
http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100 ... _page.html (see also the companion piece by a Brian Christian)
(Of course Truth in Science sent out copies of 'Explore Evolution' which is not overtly pro-YEC. Though they later praised 'Set in Stone'.)
Perhaps this bloke knows more about Buggs: http://crev.info/2013/06/plants-do-arithmetic/

The more I see of this story, the further it seems from benign publicity nonsense. And the more I see that only Buggs seems to have been chosen to comment on it, the more I wonder why and how. As the creationist article in the link quotes the BBC
Commenting on the research, Dr Richard Buggs of Queen Mary, University of London, said: “This is not evidence for plant intelligence. It simply suggests that plants have a mechanism designed to automatically regulate how fast they burn carbohydrates at night. Plants don’t do maths voluntarily and with a purpose in mind like we do. - See more at: http://crev.info/2013/06/plants-do-arit ... V7EMk.dpuf
That this is clearly an ID take on the subject is confirmed by its rapid take-up by David Coppedge's openly creationist site.
I'm also wondering why it is that if you search Google News for "Richard Buggs" (with quote marks) only one of the 13 results is in English (the BBC article). At least four other languages are represented. Are they (and they only) just leeching off the BBC, or are they part of the international creationist (arithmetically designed) grapevine?
