YECs woolly on diamond formation?

Postby a_haworthroberts » Sat Sep 07, 2013 7:21 pm

Diamonds are typically found and mined within ancient continental landmasses in areas such as southern Africa, Russia, the US, Canada and Australia. They are often associated with cratons - ancient and stable parts of the continental lithosphere (crust and upper mantle), generally found in the interiors of tectonic plates and having often survived cycles of merging and rifting of continents. Thus they occur in the most ancient of landscapes (though there are also alluvial diamonds transported elsewhere by erosive action eg by rivers). This despite the fact that - as I understand it - all areas of Earth's crust, including areas at tectonic plate boundaries and where volcanoes have erupted in recent times, overlie mantle and most diamonds are formed within Earth's mantle.

Yet, if you are a YEC, all landscapes are more or less of the same age are they not?

YECs seem rather woolly about how diamonds form and about the patterns of their worldwide distribution. From a quick search I could see nothing on the AiG website. Why not? Perhaps because the pattern of diamond distribution worldwide could be evidence for an ancient Earth where the oldest stable geological landscapes are very much older than the youngest?

Here are two YEC articles - and one from the Natural History Museum:

http://www.creationtoday.org/how-are-di ... as-formed/ (no mention here of formation within Earth's mantle, which only starts as much as around 10 miles down underneath continental interiors, probably because of the likely time needed for formation and for them to come to the surface via kimberlites)

Creation.com (Jonathan Sarfati) admits: "Diamond requires very high pressure to form—pressure found naturally on earth only deep below the surface. Thus they probably formed at a depth of 100–200 km. Geologists believe that the ones we find must have been transported supersonically to the surface, in extremely violent eruptions through volcanic pipes. Some are found in these pipes, such as kimberlites, while other diamonds were liberated by water erosion and deposited elsewhere (called alluvial diamonds)".

Creationtoday merely attributes diamonds to some kind of volcanic activity during 'Noah's Flood' - the only timing option available to a science-rejecting Bible literalist.

The NHM's main page on diamonds states that they "are some of the oldest crystals on Earth":

YECs must try to get around this - whilst accounting (or not) for where non-alluvial diamonds are found and mined today and where they do not occur.

They're woolly about mammoths, too. And feathery about dinosaurs - or not, as the case may be.
