According to Wikipedia he's a socially conservative Catholic and a former Catholic seminarian.

Wonder what he makes of the new Pope.

Far more important, what does the new pope make of evolution? His predecessor seemed to be lukewarm at best and I was never convinced that his predecessor was convinced.
