Now why can they not put it together with historical data being more reliable than if someone had been there to witness it?

It was actually why I mentioned the film 12 angry men Cathy. If you remember, the whole premise of the original conviction was based on an eye witness account which was eventually debunked by the character played by Henry Fonda.

There have been numerous miscarriages of justice based on "eye witness accounts". This one only came to light when the forensic science techniques had developed to such an extent the defendant was eventually found innocent, but only after spending 16 years in prison:

Mr Kiszko, a tax clerk from Rochdale, was arrested after three young girls told police he had indecently exposed himself to them just days before Lesley was murdered.


And the three girls who told Mr Kiszko's trial he had indecently exposed himself to them admitted they had lied.
