This article was posted a couple of days back, but it is well worth checking out. We have embryos from 560 MYA with fossilised cells and organelles. The embryos are neither vertebrate nor invertebrate but appears to belong to the same group as the common ancestor - although obviously none of these could be one of the actual common ancestors...
