Lord save us from Blair, friend of the creationists

Here's something else for the fundys to bitch about:

Lord save us from Blair, friend of the creationists

The Vardy schools in the northeast of England are state schools run by fundamentalist God botherers who believe that the Earth is only a few thousand years old, dinosaurs walked the planet alongside man and the theory of evolution is pernicious, blasphemous nonsense.

They teach evolution in the science classes, because they have to — but one former pupil told me the teacher snapped shut the textbook halfway through a lesson and said: “Well, believe that if you like, but this is what I think . . .” and proceeded to quote at some length from the book of Genesis. One hopes the kids took no notice and followed the important dictum: never trust a science textbook that has the word “begat” in it.

Tony Blair, who allowed car dealer Peter Vardy to establish the three schools, has meanwhile been lecturing Britain’s scientists. Don’t worry yourselves about creationism, he asserted (in New Scientist) — concentrate your efforts on climate change and genetics. If only he had been alive in Newton’s day: that apple might never have fallen. A bit of political direction is just what our scientific community needs.

The fact that the sensibilities of the Appalachian backwoods have now established themselves in a small corner of England does not remotely bother Blair. It doesn’t seem to concern him that parents in Middlesbrough, Doncaster and Gateshead are faced with either sending their kids many miles to a normal state school or entrusting them to the clutches of the born-again cretins down the road.
