In the new three-part series How God Made the English, Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch explores both what it means to be English and what has shaped English identity. In the first episode, Professor MacCulloch challenges the renowned notion that secular forces and the humanistic values of the Enlightenment have made the English who they are today. Rather, he shows that the roots of Englishness lie in a tangle of religious motives.
