A really frightening US fundamentalist

Postby Roger Stanyard » Sat Feb 22, 2014 3:27 pm

This one, Jerry Boykin, is about as frigthening as they get - http://freethoughtblogs.com/dispatches/ ... more-25981

What's worse he's been a top man in the US military. Lieutenant General Boykin ended up as United States Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and appears to be the man ultimately rsponsible for the Abu Ghraib fiasco. Today Boykin is Excecutive VP of the Family Research Council, a powerful fundamentalist lobbing organisation that has been designated a hate organisation by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The FRC itself is run by another extreme fundamentalist dolt, Tony Perkins - equally as frightening as Boykin.

Take it for granted that the FRC is creationist. See http://freethoughtblogs.com/dispatches/ ... t-science/ Perkins seems to have had close associations with white supremecist groups including the Ku Klux Klan.

The differences between parts of the US and the more backward looking Islamic states are very small. Not sure how and educated country can condone torture, death penalties etc. but it does.

Is it the lack of a welfare state? That is the only difference I can see between Europe and the US. Boykins exist everywhere but only in the US would they get to any position of responsibility, let alone the position he reached.

Part of the problem is that the US military and its chaplaincy corps are riddled with religious fundamentalism. The fundamentalists have been targeting the military for years. They are helped by the fact that military people are disproportionately recruited from the deep south, rural areas and fly-over country,
